Phantom Personal Devices

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and AIT wants to ensure you are aware of all the spooky parts of the cyber world!

We will post a new topic every Friday in October, so come back every Friday for a new fright!

Here are the topics we will cover this month:

This week we will cover 5 steps you can take to protect yourself on personal devices.

Tip 1: Enable Account Authentication

If given the option, enable multi-factor authentication. This will give you an extra layer of security beyond a username and password. It is available on most major email, social media, and financial accounts. Stronger authentication helps verify that only you or an authorized user has access to your online accounts.

Tip 2: Strengthen Passwords

Make your passwords long & strong. Use complex passwords with a combination of numbers, symbols, and letters. Use unique passwords for different accounts- avoid using the same password for all your accounts. Change your passwords regularly, especially if you believe they have been compromised.

Tip 3: Keep it Updated

Update the security software, operating system, and web browser on all Internet-connected devices when you are prompted to do so. Keeping your security software up to date will prevent attackers from being able to take advantage of known vulnerabilities in outdated.

Tip 4: When in doubt, throw it out

Links in email and online posts are often the way cybercriminals compromise your computer. If it looks suspicious (even if you know the source), delete it. If you know the source but are still unsure if the email is legitimate, contact the sender using a method of contact you know is accurate.

Tip 5: Share with Care

Limit the amount of personal information you share online and use privacy settings to avoid sharing information widely.
